No kids in public school? You still benefit

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? Quality public schools benefit everyone -- including those without school-aged children -- and therefore everyone should play a role in maintaining them, according to a study by two Michigan State University scholars.

Senior citizens and others who don't have children in school often argue they should be exempt from paying school taxes because they don't benefit from the schools. But that's not true, argues Zachary Neal, sociologist and lead researcher on the study, which appears in the Journal of Urban Affairs.

"Those without kids in school are getting just as much benefit from public schools as those with kids and accordingly should be just as responsible for maintaining the schools," Neal said. "It's unfair for those without kids to benefit from public schools but not play a role in taking care of the schools."

While many communities offer various school-tax exemptions, those who don't have children in school routinely oppose paying any school taxes, Neal said. In Michigan, nearly half of the 505 school bond elections between 2000 and 2005 failed, according to a March 2010 study in the journal Educational Policy.

In their study, Neal and co-author Jennifer Watling Neal, assistant professor of psychology, analyzed the data from a Gallup survey of more than 20,000 people from 26 U.S. communities from Michigan to Florida to California. As part of the survey, participants were asked how satisfied they were with their communities and to rate the overall quality of their public schools.

The researchers found a strong relationship between those who were satisfied with their communities and quality schools. This finding was not affected by gender, age, race, employment status or whether the participant owned or rented a home or had children in school.

"We found that having quality public schools makes people more satisfied with their community regardless of whether they had kids in the schools or not," Neal said.

Neal said this is likely due to two major reasons:

  • Public schools offer amenities to the entire community such as adult education courses, after-hours computer labs, workout facilities, auditorium space for churches and other groups, and more.
  • Public schools have the more indirect benefit of promoting relationships among neighborhood residents. These relationships lead to issues getting solved -- such as broken streetlights, unplowed streets or crime problems -- that benefit everyone.

"I think it really boils down to seeing public schools as more than just schools," Neal said. "They're community institutions that have an educational mission first and foremost, but they also have these other benefits as well."

Univision, Disney look at English news channel

MIAMI (AP) ? Univision and Disney are in talks to create a 24-hour news channel for Latinos in English, two sources close to the negotiations said Monday.

Both sources declined to go on the record because they were not authorized to speak.

The goal would be to begin broadcasting before the November presidential election. That would give the network plenty of time to provide political coverage to Hispanics, who are considered a significant swing voting bloc in states like Florida, New Mexico and Colorado.

Univision is the nation's largest Spanish-language media company, and it has long prided itself on its Spanish-language content. In recent years, officials have acknowledged that in order to maintain and expand viewership, they need to provide content to second- and third-generation Latinos who speak English as their first language.

The move comes in response to the 2010 census, which showed U.S. born Latinos were the fastest growing segment of the nation's Hispanic population. They made up nearly 60 percent of the growth in the nation's Latino population.

The proposed deal also reflects the growing efforts of mainstream media companies to target Latinos. Last year, Fox News added its Fox News Latino website and the Huffington Post now has an online Huffpost LatinoVoices site. Meanwhile, NBC Universal has been ramping up the partnership between its NBC News division and its Spanish language network, Telemundo.

Jorge Plasencia, vice chair of the National Council of La Raza and CEO of the Hispanic marketing firm Republica, which includes Univision among its clients, said he believes that a news channel in English would fulfill a niche.

"There's nearly 50 million Latinos in the U.S., they do want to know what's going on in Mexico, Puerto Rico and all over Latin America. The major networks don't cover that news," he said. "It's hard for those networks to go into those issues in depth because they're trying to reach all of America."

Univision and other Spanish-language networks have provided significant coverage of Latin America for their viewers. Plasencia believes second- and third-generation Latinos are still interested in that coverage, but they want it in English.

"That's why I think this and Huffpost LatinoVoices exist, because there's an appetite," he said.

For Latinos who live in cities like Los Angeles, New York and Miami that have large Hispanic populations, local broadcasts often have Latino anchors and cover stories that are particularly relevant to the Hispanic community. But the national broadcasts are lagging in that type of coverage, he said.

"At the same time, this network will take our issues and make them mainstream because many other people besides Latinos may be watching," he said.

Looking for Tucson Realtor? Pick the right one!

Realtors certainly are a valuable asset when purchasing or selling a home, but looking for a competent realtor could be a challenge. Sellers would like to move their property immediately, but buyers do not want to be forced into purchasing a property they don?t want. A good Tucson real estate agent will carefully thread the needle and handle the concerns of both parties. Excellent agents are out there, but where can these people be found?

?
Tucson Realtor

National Association of Realtors

Whether buying or selling a property, it is very important that the Tucson realtor become a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Be careful if any realtor which is not a member. The NAR has a strict code of ethics, and any violations could be grounds for the loss of the membership.

?

Word of Mouth

This is most likely the most effective methods to find the best real estate agent. Knowing a person who has recently purchased or sold a property can supply a neutral thoughts and opinions during your selection process. They will often have important information regarding the company they work with. Word of mouth referrals may be difficult in the modern real estate climate, but finding someone with firsthand experience provides awareness which usually cannot be discovered any other way.

?

Check the Established Companies

Tucson real estate firms can provide information regarding their employees that will help when selecting an agent. Any company that refuses to provide basic information is sign of trouble and a cue to move on. A good company, or even the realtors themselves will provide recent sales information, background, licensing, and other information necessary to make an informed decision. Beware of the no-name firms though. It is possible that they are legitimate, but companies that balk at providing information about their agents, including licensing information, should be avoided.

?

A significant amount of money will be changing hands in a real estate transaction. Having a good Tucson realtor is as valuable as having a good attorney. A bad one can be disastrous. Use the above guidelines and remember that choosing the right agent can be one the best decisions you can ever make.

Benefits of Funny SMS Dating Relationships Love

A lot of people agree that funny SMS exists solely for laughter. While this is absolutely true, many people still overlook the other benefits it offers. Perhaps the best advantage of receiving a funny SMS lies in its positive health effects. It may not work directly like a happy pill or an effective endorphin, but it still instils a positive physiological and psychological boost. Funny text messages always make a person smile, and the act of smiling is actually a lot better than frowning as the latter uses more muscles that contribute to wrinkles. Furthermore, it fosters closer interpersonal relationships to enhance confidence and social skills. Although you do not get to see the person on the other end, it helps to build rapport through funny SMS so that you would not feel awkward when you finally decide to meet in person.

Researchers indentify a cell-permeable peptide that inhibits hepatitis C

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Researchers from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have identified a cell-permeable peptide that inhibits a hepatitis C virus protein and blocks viral replication, which can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis.

This finding by Dr. Samuel French, an assistant professor of pathology and senior author of the study, builds on previous work by the French laboratory that identified two cellular proteins that are important factors in hepatitis C virus infection.

French and his team initially set out to identify the cellular factors involved in hepatitis C replication and, using mass spectrometry, found that heat shock proteins (HSPs) 40 and 70 were important for viral infection. HSP70 was previously known to be involved, but HSP40 was linked for the first time to hepatitis C infection, French said. They further showed that the natural compound Quercetin, which inhibits the synthesis of these proteins, significantly inhibits viral infection in tissue culture.

In this study, published Jan. 30, 2012 in the peer-reviewed journal Hepatology, French and his team demonstrated that the viral non-structural protein 5A (NS5A) directly binds to HSP70 and mapped the site of the NS5A/HSP70 complex on NS5A. While HSP70 was previously shown to bind NS5A in cells, a direct NS5A/HSP70 interaction and complex formation was established in this study. In an effort to stop this interaction, they tested peptides that might inhibit HSP70.

"This is important because we've developed a small peptide that binds to that site and blocks the interaction between the proteins that is important for viral replication," French said. "This is another, potentially highly efficacious way to block replication of hepatitis C."

An estimated 160 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C and the conventional treatments ? interferon and ribavirin ? can have significant side effects. A new drug targeting cellular proteins rather than viral proteins would be a valuable addition to the treatment arsenal, French said.

"We were surprised that this peptide works this well," French said. "While its mechanism is different, the activity of this peptide is comparable to other newly developed anti-virals."

The study, done in tissue culture, shows that the peptide gains entry into the cell easily and blocks the cascade of cellular events that allows the virus to replicate, French said. Blocking the HSP70 protein rather than a viral protein also reduces the chance of patients with the hepatitis C virus developing resistance to the peptide.

"There's no direct pressure on the virus, so it is less likely to mutate and develop resistance," French said. "The goal is to achieve a sustained response, essentially a cure, meaning there is no more virus replication. There are a lot of drugs coming out now that are designed to stop hepatitis C replication, but resistance is still an issue. About 10 to 20 percent of patients on the new drugs become resistant. This new peptide may help combat resistance."

Going forward, French and his team are testing variants of the newly discovered peptide to see if they can develop one with an even higher affinity and can decrease the size of the peptide to improve cellular penetration and liver targeting. The new and improved peptides will be tested in animal models.

This peptide "may be a candidate for hepatitis C therapy," the study states. "Considering the potency of the peptide in suppressing viral translation levels, treatment with this peptide may significantly improve the efficacy of conventional treatments in patients who become resistant to conventional therapies."

The Authentic Life: Think Twice Before you call it Quits (relationships ...

Think twice before you call it quits.? This would apply to almost anything.? A relationship, a job, an opportunity, a business, a website, a marriage and just about anything else that applies.

When it is a relationship or a marriage, you really have to think hard about all the options.? Think about all the things that are good and all the bad.? Which outweighs the other?? Is one worse and you just can't deal with it?

Perhaps make a list of all the positive things and then all the bad things that you can't stand.? Then examine them and decide which is worse.? Explore all the things that could happen if you decide to throw in the towel.? Think really hard.? Is the relationship for you?? Can you work out all the kinks?? Will you be satisfied and most of all will you be happy with the outcome?? Or is it the change that is going to make things better.?

Think really hard.? Can you really walk away from her or him?? Or aren't they the perfect fit?? Or perhaps is it something in the relationship that you want to change.? A fault.? A compromise.? A change in a situation.? A move.? A big step?? Moving in together.? Tying the knot.? Having a baby.? Having more than one.? Moving to a new house.? Change in a job.

Whatever it is, you both need to sit down and talk about it.? And as a relationship moves on to something more serious, naturally one or both of you are going to want to decide on making a move in the relationship.? Are you ready yet to begin your life under one roof?? Moving in together can be a big deal.? But usually it is something at least one or both of you would want.? Usually this is the girl hoping for it.? Or the girl hoping for marriage.? Lets face it, the girl wants to change her address.

Make sure you are both ready for either moving in together or getting hitched.? Either way, if it ends up being a really long time before it is talked about, one of the two of you is going to question the relationship and want more.? Or leave.

So that is relationships.? Then there is babies.? That is another huge step in life.? Make sure you are ready to play russian roulette, because once that egg is planted, there is no turning back.? And believe me, they will change your life whether you want it to or not.? But they are great.? I love my four.? But at this point in my life, I wouldn't want any more.? If I ever ended up pregnant by some fluke, I surely would love it to death anyway, but I have reached the age where I am done.? I was a breeder, but four is my limit.

Spend time together before you have kids.? Then your time is cut in half.

So that is babies.

The other things when you want to call it quits is your job.? Maybe you want a change.? Tired of your current place of work.? The hours aren't that great, the pay is bad or you aren't happy working where you are at.? Weigh out all the options.? Can you live on less money?? Can you find a different job?? Do you want to do what you really love?

So that's the job.

Now there is the website that you have created for your new business.? This is where I am at.? Well, there are things I would like in my relationship too, but this present thought today has been my website.?

My paper doll website has only been up and fully running for the last three months.? It's seen 2030 visitors, but no emails, comments or sales.? I've been kind of bummed out.? This morning, I was almost seriously thinking of calling Vistaprint and pulling the plug.? I called a few other places that I needed to get a hold of, found out I had a credit on one of my utilities so I don't have to pay it for a few months.? That was nice to hear.? Then I was almost ready to call and cancel the website.

Then I got online to my site, went in to edit the website for a minute and add a share button for twitter tweets.? I should go in and do that on every page.? As I was doing that and looking at my stuff and my account, I had a slight change of heart.? I called them up anyway.? I wanted some questions answered and was kind of ready to cancel if I felt like it.

Then, I thought of my old websites that I had created last year in the beginning of the year.? I only gave those two months at the most and I was told by lots of people that I gave up too soon.? And those sites were more expensive and I didn't realize I was locked into a contract for a year and I had to fork over more money to them for quitting early.? And I made nothing.? I was really bummed out by no sales.

So when I was on the phone, I thought back to that time.? And I talked with the girl about calling it quits too early.? I told her I really did want to stick it out for a year.? But I started to ask her some questions about advertising and all the info about google ranks and getting found.? I told her I really couldn't afford to pay for all kinds of advertising.? But we talked about free advertising and different ways of advertising.? Getting the word out.

Of course, all along I have been using my blogs, facebook (which is friends and family and your friends and family usually don't buy your stuff.? They would rather have it for nothing)., twitter, digg (which I have been told is a wasteland), stumbleupon, delicious, buzzfeed, linkedin, myspace, igoogle, blogher, and any other type of social bookmarking site.

I am considering getting my paperdolls on one of the blogs to have for sale on the blogs.? And Blogger is free.?

While I was on the phone with her today, she mentioned googling free advertising, which I started to do.? Then she mentioned googling paper doll groups and joining and doing some free advertising with people that are into the same thing.? I thought that was a very good idea and tried to join two places so far.

Then I started looking at free advertising.? I started with Yelt and discovered I was sent to a section where I was supposed to pay.? Not free.? Backed out of there.? Then I went to Manta.? I was able to get my website on there for free.? Of course they want you to pay if you want more exposure.? But I called to verify my listing and told them I couldn't afford to pay and could just do the free advertising.?

Then, I discovered another place.? Intuit.? I thought, "Oh great, now I am back to my other old website service."? I really liked their website builder though.? It was my favorite site out of the three places I created a website with.? I had one with GoDaddy.com? but never really got that one started.? I had one with web.com but I didn't like their website builder as well.

So, today as I started to sign up for Intuit, I read very carefully the plan.? You can have a free website with them for up to a year and then they charge you $4.99 a month.? Which that isn't that bad.? Especially if by then I'm getting some orders.? Which I really hope.? So today, I have signed up for the free plan for a year.? What you get is a domain, 3 pages and I'm forgetting the other part.? Maybe the memory space?

Which for what I want it for, 3 pages is fine.? So I have published the first page today.? It hasn't been registered yet, but I imagine by tomorrow it will be.? I basically got my first page, with business, address, all the important information.? A big introduction which also refers them to my writing sites and my blogs.? Might as well advertise for them too.? Then at the bottom of the first page I had added a few of the paper doll pictures with some details.? I think my second page will have lots of other pictures and then my third page will be an order form with all the details for them to order.? I haven't decided if I'm going to add paypal buttons.? I don't want to suddenly have two websites where I am paying.?

But what it will be basically for is to direct them to the full blown website.? Where they can order paper dolls.

So, I'm not calling it quits on my website yet.? I should give it a good year.? If I was to quit now, I would always be wondering, "What if I had given it a year?? Maybe I would be getting sales."

Paper dolls aren't a neccessity.? It is a specialty.? But people are buying them.? I go to look at the OPDAG paperdoll magazine and I see all these popular new paper doll artists that seem to be making money at what they do.? And I wonder to myself, "How are they doing it?"? I probably should ask the editor to have an article from one of them about the secrets to success and having a successful paper doll website.? That would be really helpful to read.

I once was told by another artist that I had something really unique that could take off and become a business.? I have always remembered that, and now I think, "REALLY?? How do I attempt to do that?? With luck?"?

And another person said it takes a lot of advertising.

Well anyway the new advertising website is going to be:? http://www.jennyjopaperdoll.com/? That's the domain name.? But I'm not sure if it will work until I get it registered.

jenniferjofaypaperdolls.net? My paper doll website.

I would really appreciate it if anyone would leave a comment with some possible suggestions.? I will take anything.? I feel like I'm just grasping at straws right now.

Which seems to be the same with the writing sites and earning money writing online.? That's more fun than anything.? And it's kind of fun to see a little bit of money trickle in.? I've actually had enough to buy a dunkin donuts pound of coffee and then some.? And with the writing sites we are getting practice and connecting with a community of writers.? Which is always a good thing.

And selling on ebay is great.? But I would love it even more if my paper doll website could just take flight.? I don't want to throw in the towel just yet.? What if someday I got found?? That would be great.? And if not, I have the paperdolls anyway to pass down to my kids.? But I would love to see it become something else.
Money in my pocket.

So anyway, any suggestions would be helpful.? Maybe there are some things I haven't thought of.

WPSL suspends 2012 season

updated 12:39 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO - Women's Professional Soccer won't play the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner.

The league's Board of Governors voted Monday to suspend the season with hopes of resuming in 2013, the WPS announced.

In October, it terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with owner Dan Borislow all season. A Florida judge ruled earlier this month that the league failed to follow its own dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise, and another court hearing is set for Wednesday.

WPS CEO Jennifer O'Sullivan said owners chose to cancel the season over possibly working with Borislow in the league again.

"We have diverted so many resources into litigation," she said. "This is something that needs to be resolved before we can move forward with play."

Borislow purchased the former Washington Freedom before last season and moved the club to South Florida, renaming it for a telephone call device he invented. The magicJack franchise was repeatedly disciplined during the season for not meeting league standards. In August, after Borislow filed suit against the WPS, the league released a statement accusing him of violations ranging from "unprofessional and disparaging treatment of his players to failure to pay his bills."

The league has played three seasons. It needed a waiver from the U.S. Soccer Federation to be sanctioned as a first-division league in 2012 with only five teams, below the required eight. In the deal with the governing body in December, WPS agreed to increase the number of teams to a minimum of six for 2013 and at least eight for 2014.
